About Us

Our Story

The Hague Winery tasting room is located on Historic Buena Vista Plantation, circa 1835, in a rural town, Hague, in the Northern Neck of Virginia. The tasting room is housed in a former barn that overlooks the manor home, outbuildings, vineyards and surrounding farmland. Wines are vinted in the French style from excellent quality grapes grown with precision viticulture.  The tasting room features a gift shop with local crafts and photography, wine accessories, and Goot Essa cheeses, local jams/jellies, and OLLI salame.

Our Vineyard

Each vine is hand-tended throughout the growing season.  The vineyard is situated on a rise–the first high ground south of the Potomac so that it remains a bit warmer in the winter from North winds and somewhat breezy year round.   The soil at the winery is well-drained and sandy loam, ideally suited for grape growing.   Vine rows are oriented North and South to ensure maximum sunlight on their canopies during the growing season.

With the advice of French-trained viticulturist Lucy Morton, 6,000 vines were cane-pruned and trained using the vertical shoot positioning (VSP) method.  The vineyard is planted at 42 inch intervals between vines with nine foot spacing between the rows, following common practice in Europe’s higher quality vineyards.

Our Wines

We strive for excellence in our winemaking. Our current wines include Chardonel Sur Lees, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Captain's Reserve, and a Cynthia Dessert Wine. Chardonel is our top selling wine.
